Overview

I'm building a browser-based 3D editor for crochet designers: you manipulate and assemble shapes into a character, and the app instantly writes a stitch-by-stitch crochet pattern for each piece, including organic shapes, joint areas, and assembly instructions. The app grows and becomes smarter from every edge case it uncovers, and uses a built-in validator to re-read its own output to check the math.

What It Does

Assemble

Drop in simple 3D shapes and combine them into a character, the way you'd rough out an amigurumi before picking up a hook.

Auto-write

Each piece exports a stitch-by-stitch pattern, including how overlapping pieces adapt to each other and the order to sew them together.

Self-check

A built-in validator re-reads the pattern the app just wrote and checks the round math against every craft rule before you trust it.

The hardest part is translating the shape into a pattern: the user's customized shapes have to become a countable sequence of rounds, with increases and decreases landing in the right spots, and joins that hold up once the piece is stuffed. Every rule in the engine traces back to a mistake I've actually made or seen reported, so the output reads like a pattern a person would write, not a mesh dumped to text.

Why I'm Building It

Writing patterns is the slowest, most error-prone part of running Pink Daisy Crochet. I'd design a character, crochet it, and then spend hours reverse-engineering what my hands already knew into rounds someone else could follow, usually finding a miscount two test-makes later.

The bet

If the shape you sculpt can carry the pattern with it, designing and documenting stop being two separate jobs.

So this is equal parts personal tool and design problem: what does a crochet-native editor feel like, and how much craft judgment can live in software without flattening the craft?

Harder joint cases

Two joint problems I'm working through right now:

  • Non-symmetrical organic joints: finding the easiest pattern when two organic shapes meet at difficult angles.
  • 3-or-more-shape joints: catching and learning the edge cases when three or more pieces intersect at one joint.

Next

Free-form sculpting

Pinch and extrude shapes directly instead of snapping primitives together, with stitch rounds that ripple across the surface as it deforms. This is the north star: sculpting derives the pattern.

Then

Open it up to other makers

Package the editor into something other crocheters can actually use: pattern export that is PDF and print-ready, saved projects, and a shared library of starting shapes, so the tool leaves my workshop and reaches the people it was built for.
